Brakes are the one system on a car where wear is completely normal and completely predictable. And where leaving it too long turns a routine job into an expensive one. Pads are consumable. Discs are not, until pads have been run down into them.

Every brake job starts with measurement. Pad thickness and disc thickness are checked against the minimum specification for the vehicle, so the recommendation is based on a number rather than on how the brakes feel on a short drive.

When to get it looked at.

Most of these start small. Catching them early is the difference between a routine job and an expensive one.
  • Squealing or grinding

A high squeal is often the wear indicator doing its job. A metallic grinding noise usually means the pad material is gone and metal is contacting the disc. Stop driving on it.

  • The pedal goes soft or sinks

A spongy pedal points to air or moisture in the fluid; a pedal that slowly sinks under steady pressure points to a leak or a failing master cylinder. Both are urgent.

  • Pulling to one side under braking

Usually a sticking caliper or a collapsed hose acting on one wheel only. It lengthens stopping distance and wears one side out fast.

  • Shudder or pulsing through the pedal

Typically uneven disc thickness or a warped disc. Often correctable by machining if there is enough material left.

  • The brake warning light is on

Depending on the vehicle this indicates low fluid, worn pads or an ABS fault. All three need reading properly.

  • Pad and disc replacement

Front and rear pads and discs replaced with components to the correct specification for the vehicle.

  • Disc machining

Where a disc is within specification but has run unevenly, machining can restore a true surface, cheaper than replacement when the material is there for it.

  • Calipers and cylinders

Sticking, seized and leaking calipers and wheel cylinders repaired or replaced, including the slides and pins that cause most sticking.

  • Hoses and lines

Perished flexible hoses and corroded hard lines replaced. A hose can collapse internally and hold pressure on one wheel with nothing visible outside.

  • Brake fluid replacement

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes the system from the inside. It is replaced on a time interval, not a wear one.

  • Handbrake and park brake

Adjustment, cables and mechanisms, a common roadworthy failure item and easy to overlook.

Why it matters

What happens if it waits.

Braking distance is the one thing you cannot negotiate with. Worn pads, contaminated fluid and a sticking caliper each add metres to a stop, and they compound.

There is a cost argument too. Replacing pads on time is routine work. Running them to metal takes the discs with them, and can take a caliper as well.

Brake Repairs, common questions.

How do I know if my brake pads need replacing?

The usual signs are a squealing noise when braking, a grinding noise, longer stopping distances, or a brake warning light. Many vehicles have a wear indicator that squeals deliberately when the pads reach their limit. The only reliable answer is measurement, pad and disc thickness are checked against the manufacturer's minimum during any service or brake inspection.

Do you repair brakes and suspension?

Yes. Freddy's Auto Care carries out brake repairs and steering and suspension repairs from its Craigieburn workshop, along with servicing, roadworthy inspections, air conditioning, clutch and transmission work, tyres and diagnostics.

Can brake discs be machined instead of replaced?

Often, yes. If a disc has enough material left above its minimum thickness, machining can restore a flat, true surface and cure brake shudder for considerably less than replacement. If it is already at or near minimum thickness, or it is cracked or heat-damaged, it has to be replaced, machining it further would leave too little material to disperse heat safely.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it draws in moisture from the air over time, and that lowers its boiling point and corrodes the system internally. Most manufacturers specify replacement every two years or so regardless of kilometres. Check your logbook for the interval that applies to your vehicle.
