How do I know if my clutch is going?

The clearest sign is slipping, the engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate to match, most noticeably uphill or under load. Others include the bite point moving higher up the pedal, difficulty getting into first or reverse, shudder as you pull away, or a burning smell after heavy traffic. A soft pedal that sinks to the floor is more often a hydraulic fault than the clutch itself, which is a much smaller repair.

How long does a clutch last?

There is no reliable figure, because it depends almost entirely on use. A clutch in a car driven mostly on open roads can last well past 200,000 kilometres, while the same clutch in constant stop-start traffic or used for towing may need replacing far earlier.

Do you replace the flywheel at the same time?

Only if it needs it. The flywheel face is inspected while the gearbox is out, and it is machined or replaced when it is scored, heat-cracked or, on dual-mass flywheels, past its wear limits.
