When should a timing belt be replaced?

At the interval in your vehicle's logbook, which is set by both kilometres and years, the belt ages whether the car is driven or not. On an interference engine, a belt that snaps allows the valves and pistons to collide, which usually means an engine rebuild or replacement. It is the one service interval that is never worth extending. Not all engines use a belt; many use a chain, which is inspected rather than replaced on an interval.

My car is overheating. What should I do?

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch the engine off and let it cool before opening anything, a hot cooling system is under pressure and can scald badly. Do not keep driving to reach a destination. Once cool, the common causes are low coolant, a failed thermostat, a failing water pump, a blocked radiator or a cooling fan fault. Continuing to drive an overheating engine risks warping the cylinder head or destroying the head gasket, which is a far larger repair than any of those causes.
